Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:

1) The Wetlands habitat, perhaps the most memorable room in the National Aviary, just got a bit nicer – and a lot safer for birds both inside and outside its confines. With its three-story-high ceilings, greenhouse-like glass walls, and flock of bright-pink flamingos, it is a visitor favorite. The five-month, $3 million renovation of the walk-through habitat was unveiled Monday. It's got a newly resurfaced concrete deck and, below the railing that overlooks the pond, a new pebbled beach for the birds to rest on or toddle across. But the most important improvement might be the least obvious. All 1,200 panes in those towering glass walls – some 20,000 square feet of window – have been replace by a new, bird-friendly glass by Pittsburgh-based Vitro Architectural Glass."Window strikes" are a big problem for birds around the world, who tend to fly into obstacles they can't see, sometimes at the cost of their lives. So, the new panes are acid-etched with a design suggesting undulating reeds. The new glass will also warm the habitat by maximizing UV and natural light in the space.

2) A 14-year-old boy arrived at a local hospital last night looking for care after being shot. Pittsburgh public safety said at the boy showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the ankle following an incident in the city's Homewood North neighborhood. Police were alerted to the shooting around 8:50 p.m. Monday after received a ShotSpotter alert from the 1200 block of Mohler Street. However, the exact location of the shooting has not been determined. The teen was in stable condition. No arrests have been announced.

3) Pittsburgh police are asking for the public's help in locating a 13-year-old girl who was last seen on Halloween in the city's Beechview neighborhood. Mariah Moreno was last spotted near Broadway Avenue wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and black shoes. She is described as being five-feet-three-inches tall and 100 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call Pittsburgh police are 412-323-7141.

4) Local parents have a lot of questions following Pittsburgh Public Schools' cancellation of a student bus route. The bus driver for a Hazelwood route is no longer employed at A-1 Transit. That route is now leaving parents wondering what's next for student transportation. "There are children who live in an area that services this Pittsburgh Public School — why wouldn't there be transportation?" said Amber Adkins who lives in Hazelwood. The district said it is offering mileage reimbursement and bus tickets for the Pittsburgh Regional Transit, but some parents said that's just not feasible. "It does not work for an 8-year-old second grader — it's not responsible at all," Adkins said. Now, as they wait for answers, community members are stepping up to help get the neighborhood's kids to school. There is no timeline from the district on when that route may come back. The spokesperson said that if someone doesn't have a car or is out of options, the district is encouraging them to call the Parent Hotline.

5) A popular Pittsburgh brewery is closing its doors. After five years, Bier's Pub and War Street Brewery on the North Side will be shutting down business. The news was announced by the brewery owners on Facebook. "While this is a bittersweet decision, and we will miss being a part of a truly vibrant neighborhood, we look forward to the adventures that lie ahead of us," the post stated. Replacing Bier's on Western Avenue will be Tony's Pub. Many of the Bier's staff will be working at the new place. War Streets Brewery will also continue to live on with new owners and in a new location. Biers said the new owners will make the official announcement soon.
