6 Injured In Shooting Outside Funeral In Pittsburgh's Brighton Heights: Police

Police said the shooting happened during the funeral for John Hornezes Jr., who was shot and killed on Oct. 15 near a North Side bus stop.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Six people were injured Friday after shots were fired outside a funeral in Pittsburgh's Brighton Heights neighborhood, authorities confirmed.

During a news conference broadcast by WTAE, Pittsburgh police commander Richard Ford said shots were fired shortly after noon in the 3700 block of Brighton Road near Destiny of Faith Church.

The shooting happened outside the funeral for John Hornezes Jr., police said. Hornezes was shot and killed outside a Sunoco gas station on Cedar Avenue on Oct. 15 during a shootout that also killed two women waiting at a North Side bus stop.

One person was taken to the hospital in critical condition Friday, Ford said. The remaining five victims were in stable condition.

Police did not release information about any potential suspects.

Residents are asked to avoid the area as police investigate.

Friday's incident is the latest in an alarming trend of recent shootings in the city and comes just two days after a 17-year-old boy died after being shot in the head in Beechview.

Three people were shot last week in the city's Carrick neighborhood. Police took a man to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds. A short time later, two other victims self-transported to an area hospital.

Last week, more than 13 shots were fired in Homewood, wounding one man. Another man was shot Oct. 16 during a fight near the intersection of East Carson Street and South 14th Street in the South Side.
