FINDLAY TOWNSHIP, PA — Following a year's delay due to the pandemic, construction is beginning this week on Pittsburgh International Airport's new $1.4 billion terminal expected to open in 2025.

The airport announced the major development via Blue Sky, its news and information website.

The 700,000-square-foot terminal will include a ticketing area, security checkpoints, baggage claim, rental car facilities, new parking lots and roadways and a 3,300-space parking garage. There also will be outdoor spaces for passengers and guests in pre- and post-security areas.

Allegheny County Airport Authority officials expect the new terminal will cut curb to airside times for passengers by 50 percent. The new terminal will have three times more covered parking spaces than the Landside Terminal it is replacing.

The Landside Terminal, which opened in 1992, will be repurposed or razed when the new terminal opens.

The terminal will be built adjacent to the current Airside Terminal between concourses C and D. The airport will retain its center core and the Airside Terminal's "X" design.

Airlines serving the airport signed off on the new terminal complex in June, agreeing to a new seven-year operating deal that enabled the authority to issue bonds to pay for the project.

The terminal will be funded by airline charges and airport revenues such as parking, concessions, real estate income and natural gas drilling royalties.
