2) Two former presidents will be joining locals in the Pittsburgh area today ahead of Tuesday's midterm election. Former President Barack Obama will host a rally in Schenley Plaza in Oakland around noon backing Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman. Then, later in the evening, former President Donald Trump will rally at 7 p.m. at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Latrobe for Republican candidate for Senate, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Republican candidate for governor, Doug Mastriano.
3) Part of Downtown Pittsburgh's Grant Street will be closed for portions of today and Sunday as crews install and decorate the city's official Christmas tree on the City-County Building's portico. Grant Street will be closed from Third Avenue to Fifth Avenue from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today while Forestry Division crews transport and install the tree, city officials said. On Sunday, the northbound travel lane closest to the City-County Building will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. while crews finish decorating the tree. 4) Two new apartment complexes are planned for construction in Pittsburgh's Strip District. This week, the city's Planning Commission approved two separate developments that will bring additional housing to the area. The first development, located at 2926 Smallman St., will be seven stories and 85 feet tall. The site is now occupied by a temporary parking lot and an empty gravel lot, previously housing a gas station. The second development will sit at 26th and Railroad streets. The Planning Commission approved plans to tear down an existing one-story building on the site and replace it with a seven-story, 75.5-foot-tall apartment building. According to officials with Pro-Housing Pittsburgh, neither project will displace existing residents. Both will increase residential density in the neighborhood, as they're close to public transit, jobs and education and recreational opportunities.
