PA Teen Struck By Lightning In Home, Several Houses Hit: Report

Fire officials said the lightning went through the teen's pinky finger and out her left leg.

NORTH HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, PA — A 15-year-old girl was struck by lightning this week while inside her Pittsburgh-area home, according to a report citing local fire officials.

At least five homes on Sedona Drive in North Huntingdon Township were struck by lightning Monday, Action News 4 reported. Giana Scaramuzzo's home was among them.

Circleville Fire Department Captain Keith Gray confirmed Scaramuzzo was struck by lightning, the station reported. The lightning went through the teen's pinky finger and out her left leg, Gray said.

Scaramuzzo was treated on-site and is doing well, Action News 4 reported.

In hindsight, Scaramuzzo may have gotten lucky. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lightning is one of the leading causes of weather-related fatalities. Still, the odds of being struck by lightning in a given year are around 1 in 500,000.

Surprisingly, about one-third of lightning injuries occur indoors, according to the CDC. Men are also much more likely than women to be struck by lightning.
