Pittsburgh Accent Ranks Among The Nation's Best: Analysis

You might be surprised to find out what percentage of tweets regarding Pittsburgh's accent are positive.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Would yinz be happy to know that da ‘burgh has onenna da the county's most popular accents n'at? Would that make ya wanna go dahn da bar and get an Ahrn to celebrate?

Online word search tool Wordtips recently used an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze how positively Twitter users talk about 165 accents throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries worldwide.

More than a half-million Twitter posts were reviewed and the results were broken into national and international levels. Da 'burgh came in fourth in the U.S category.

Which cities finished ahead of us? New Orleans came out on top with 46.4 percent of tweets regarding the accent there being positive. According to Wordtips, the local accent there known as Yat is influenced by Irish, Italian, French and different African languages.

The Mississippi accent was rated positively in 35.1 percent of tweets, while the Hawaiian was spoken highly of in 34.6. The positivity of Pittsburgh's accent was 32.5 percent.

Finishing out the top 10 were Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Upper Midwestern, Boston and Cajun.

The nation's least-favorite accents? California fared the worst on Twitter, with Maine, New Jersey, the Bronx and Brooklyn accents also being remarked upon unfavorably.
