Pittsburgh-Area Attorney Launches PA Lt. Governor Bid

A familiar face in Pittsburgh-area politics has entered the race for Pennsylvania lieutenant governor.

PITTSBURGH, PA — A Pittsburgh attorney and former Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate announced Thursday that he is seeking the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor.

Jason Richey, 54, of Sewickely, is a partner at K& Gates in Pittsburgh. He also is chairman of the Allegheny County Republican Party.

“Growing up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, I witnessed firsthand the impact of economic downturn, and the lack of opportunity can have on a community and its residents,” Richey said. “Today, because of failed policies and ineffective leadership, our economy’s stagnant, and opportunities are on the decline. “We must turn Pennsylvania around now."

Richey ran in the Republican primary for governor in 2022, but dropped out of the race to endorse former U.S. Attorney William McSwain. State Sen. Doug Mastriano, who lost in the general election to current Gov. Josh Sahpiro

If Richey triumphs over three other Republican lieutenant governor hopefuls, he likely will face Lt. Gov. Austin Davis in the general election. He and Shapiro already have announced their reelection plans.

State Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who is seeking the Republican gubernatorial nomination, immediately endorsed Richey.

Richey graduated from Hopewell Area High School. He attended Allegheny College, where he went on to become a three-time NCAA Academic All-American as a member of the Allegheny wrestling team, according to a news release. After graduating from the Ohio State College of Law, he returned home to Pittsburgh to practice law.
