PITTSBURGH, PA — A proposed expansion of Bakery Square likely will sound the death knell for the popular Trader Joe's in its current East Liberty location, but customers of the popular grocery store shouldn't be overly concerned.

Walnut Capital, the developer behind the expansion plan, is in talks to move Trader Joe's to a new building in the development plan, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

That means the new Trader Joe's still will compete with a new 36,000-square foot Giant Eagle Market District supermarket that will be part of the new Meridian development being built nearby.

The Bakery Square expansion plan isn't a done deal, though. Walnut Capital wants a zoning variance from the city to proceed with the project.

The current Trader Joe's building would not be the only building demolished under the plan. The Village of Eastside, the 14-acre site that includes a Staples, McDonalds and other businesses, also would be razed.
