PITTSBURGH, PA — The Allegheny County Health Department has ordered the closure of Caravan on Smithfield Street, Downtown.
A live mouse was observed in the basement during an inspection on Wednesday. This was a repeat violation, the inspection report indicated.
Large quantities of mouse droppings were found underneath a stairwell.

Numerous flies were found in the basement along with the live rodent, as was a bag of decomposing carrots.
Cut cherry tomatoes and other items were being stored at a temperature of 51 degrees. Food must be stored at 41 degrees or below.

The eatery also is operating without a valid health permit.
It is unclear when - or if - the restaurant will reopen.
