PITTSBURGH, PA — The city's likely next police chief was fired last year from his position as the chief in Fort Lauderdale, FL, after just over six months on the job.

Mayor Ed Gainey nominated Larry Scirotto, a former Pittsburgh assistant police chief to be the city's top cop. Scirotto spent 23 years on the city force before his retirement in 2018 and was the youngest assistant chief in bureau history.

He was one of three finalists for the job.

Scirotto lost his job in Florida after complaints that he made hiring and promotion decisions with a minority-first approach. He has filed a wrongful termination suit against the city.

Scirotto will succeed former Chief Scott Schubert, who retired last summer. Thomas Stangrecki has served as acting chief since then.
