Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Player Dead
A beloved member of the Pittsburgh Pirates last World Series-winning team 45 years ago has died.
PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pirates have lost another member of their last World Series team in 1979. Catcher Ed Ott has died.
He was 72.
"A beloved member of the Pirates family, Ed spent seven of his eight years in the Major Leagues with the Pirates and was a valued member of our World Series Championship team in 1979," the team stated in an online posted on Sunday.

"Our sincere condolences to his wife, Sue, daughter Michelle, and the entire Ott family."
According to MLBTradeRumors, Ott is most famous for his role as a key piece on Pittsburgh’s 1979
team, which won 98 games before sweeping the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Championship Series and then the Baltimore Orioles in a thrilling seven-game World Series.

Ott was traded to the California Angels following the 1980 season along with another player in exchange for first baseman Jason Thompson.
After his playing career ended, Ott was a minor league manager in the Pirates organization and a coach with the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers.
