Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Championship Player Dies
The player was an integral component of one of the Bucs' last World Series titles.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Vic Davalillo, a valuable player on the Pirates 1971 World Championship team, has died. He was 84.
The Pirates announced his death Friday on social media.
The Bucs acquired Davalillo and pitcher Nelson Briles from the St. Louis Cardinals in January 1971 for Matty Alou and George Brunet. That season, he batted .285 as he played all three outfield positions and first base.

The Pirates won the National League Eastern Division, defeated the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series and bested the Baltimore Orioles in a thrilling seven-game World Series.
While with the Bucs in 1972, Davalillo hit a career-high .317 while helping the Pirates win the Eastern Division again before losing to the Cincinnati Reds in the NLCS.

The Pirates sold Davalillo to the Oakland Athletics in 1973.
During his career, Davalillo also played for the Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels.
