Pittsburgh Plates: Oakland Gets New Eatery This Weekend

A restaurant chain makes its Pittsburgh debut on Saturday.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The Halal Guys, a national chain featuring gyros, chicken, falafel and other dishes, will open its 100th location Saturday in Oakland. Located at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Atwood Street on the University of Pittsburgh campus, the restaurant will be open daily 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

The restaurant announced the opening on its Facebook page. The first 100 patrons on Saturday will receive a free platter.

The Halal Guy franchise was started by three Egyptian founders in 1990 in New York City. According to the restaurant's website, they began selling halal food to Muslim taxi drivers. From such small beginnings, the chain now says it has 400 new restaurants in development.
