Pittsburgh Real Estate Magnate Howard Hanna Arrangements Set

The founder and architect of the Howard Hanna real estate empire died Saturday at the age of 101.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Funeral arrangements have been made for Howard W. Hanna Jr., founder of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, the nation's largest independently owned real estate business. Mr. Hanna, of Oakmont, who also was a prominent Pittsburgh philanthropist, died Saturday at 101.

Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 p.m.-7p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland. Interment will be private.

“Pittsburgh has lost a business pioneer and a civic leader," Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a news release.

"Howard Hanna began in humble beginnings, and through hard work, he changed the real estate
industry. He grew a small Pittsburgh company into one of the nation’s biggest real estate
empires.

“His legacy lives on through his children Hoddy, Helen, and Ann. The Hanna family continues to contribute to the betterment of Pittsburgh. We are grateful to Howard for all he has done for our community and express our condolences to the Hanna family on his passing.”

Howard "Hoddy" Hanna III, Hanna Holdings Inc. chairman, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:“My dad was the smartest guy that I knew, and he taught me everything I know about real estate and business."
