Pittsburgh South Side Weekend Traffic Restrictions Returning

PITTSBURGH, PA — After a temporary suspension triggered by a partial building collapse on East Carson Street, the city Department of Public Safety this weekend will resume traffic restrictions in the city's South Side.

Initiated last month, the weekend traffic pattern changes were a response to increased gun violence, overcrowded sidewalks and streets, traffic safety obstacles and noise complaints
along East Carson since pandemic restrictions have been lifted. The goal was to limit vehicular traffic flow into the neighborhood's bustling, and frequently violence-prone, commercial corridor.

After consulting with business owners and residents, the city has modified the traffic patterns slightly to ensure access to restaurants and retailers in the early evening hours.

Beginning at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, East Carson will be limited to one-way traffic
traveling eastbound (outbound) between South 10th and South 18th streets. The previous start time was 7 p.m. No parking measures will be enforced on those blocks of East Carson Street starting at 8 p.m. and officials warn vehicles will be towed to keep the area clear for public safety vehicles.

Signage along East Carson will be marked to reflect the altered weekend parking hours.

Side streets from South 11th to South 17th will remain open to through traffic until 9:30 p.m. and then vehicles will be diverted around those streets via either Muriel Street or Sarah Street. In
previous weeks, the side streets were closed at 7 p.m.
