Pittsburgh Woman Dies After Vehicle Plunges Into Monongahela River: Latest Info
Despite a dramatic rescue effort, a Pittsburgh woman did not survive when her car plummeted into the Monongahela River on Thursday.
PITTSBURGH, PA — A woman who was rescued after her car plunged off the Parkway East and into the icy waters of the Monongahela River on Thursday has died.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office identified the woman as Jacinta Stevens, 31, of the city's West End.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, Stevens was traveling east on the parkway when she lost control of her 2013 Ford Explorer at mile marker 71.4, which is near the Forbes Avenue/Oakland off ramp.

The vehicle went over the concrete barrier on the right berm of the roadway and came to rest in the river.
In a dramatic rescue effort, Pittsburgh River Rescue divers were able to break through the ice and remove Stevens from the vehicle. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where she died last night.

Because of the frigid temperatures, the vehicle remained in the water as of Friday morning.
It is unclear what caused the fatal accident. The investigation is ongoing. Any witnesses are asked to call the state police at 412-299-1607.
