Popular Pittsburgh Tavern Hit With Consumer Alert

The Allegheny County Health Department did not like what it found at a well-known Pittsburgh bar.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Gooski's status as a legendary Pittsburgh bar did not keep the Allegheny County Health Department from issuing a consumer alert for the Polish Hill tavern.

A recent inspection found both cutting boards in the kitchen soiled with old food debris. A black, mold-like substance was found in the walk-in cooler and on the ice machine, and a red mold-like substance was found in the soda gun and holster at the bar.

Additionally, a bucket in the beer cooler holding thawing raw chicken was soiled with grease and dirt. Old breading with egg wash was found on top of the prep cooler and a moldy container of expired mustard was stored in the prep cooler.

Evidence of smoking was seen in the kitchen via a tray of cigarette butts. The kitchen lacked a hand-washing sink in the kitchen, and the inspector was unable to find soap or paper towels there. When asked where employees wash hands, an employee responded the restroom was used for that purpose.

While no pest activity was observed, the inspection noted that the environment in the bar was an ideal one for pests to occur.
