Potential Pittsburgh Amazon Headquarters Site Renamed

The rechristening comes less than a week before Pittsburgh makes it bid to Amazon.

PITTSBURGH, PA - The number one location Pittsburgh likely will pitch to Amazon as a potential site for its second headquarters was renamed Friday. The Almono property in Hazelwood was rechristened Hazelwood Green.

Almono is the former site of the LTV works, a 178-acre property along the Monongahela currently owned by a trio of Pittsburgh foundations. It’s been touted by civic leaders such as Mayor Bill Peduto as the preferred location by the team assembling Pittsburgh’s Amazon proposal.

Peduto was one of the elected officials on hand for the renaming ceremony, which occurred just six days before metropolitan areas must have their headquarter bids into Amazon. The e-commerce giant plans to invest $5 billion in the new campus and hire as many as 50,000 workers to fill it.

Construction is slated to begin next year on the main roadway through the property. Hazelwood Green is eventually envisioned to be a mix of offices, retail, housing and recreational green space.

A “big tent event” for the public will occur at the site Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
