Relentless Winter Storm Pummels Pittsburgh: Latest Info

Conditions are deteriorating in the Pittsburgh area as a massive winter storm hits the region.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Heavy snow and mixed precipitation is falling rapidly in Southwestern Pennsylvania in the worst winter storm in more than a decade occurs.

According to the National Weather Service, total snow accumulations will total between nine and 14 inches in the Pittsburgh metro area, with a light glaze of ice for areas southeast of the city.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning commute.

The weather service advises that people should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

Prior to today, the record snowfall amount for the January 25th calendar day was 5.2 inches set back in 2014. That record tumbled as of 9:25 a.m., as the official measurement at Pittsburgh International Airport was 5.3 inches. Obviously, that number has increased since then.

With the storm increasing in intensity, Giant Eagle and its Market District locations will be closing early today. The supermarket chain issued the following statement:

"All Giant Eagle locations opened for business as scheduled this morning and all have seen small, but steady flows of customers coming in to pick up needed items.

“With the safety of customers and Team Members top of mind, we have made the decision to close all Giant Eagle and Market District locations at 4 p.m. today. We intend to reopen stores for normal business hours tomorrow.”

Allegheny County officials are expected to provide a storm update later today.
