Revered Pittsburgh Broadcaster Reveals Foot Amputation
A legendary Pittsburgh broadcast journalist has disclosed a downturn in his health.
PITTSBURGH, PA — Stan Savran, a Pittsburgh sports broadcasting icon since the mid-1970s, revealed on Wednesday that he has had his right foot amputated. Savran has had numerous health issues in recent years and disclosed last year that he was battling lung cancer.
Savran, 74, hosts a weekday talk show on 970 ESPN from noon to 2 p.m. He has been a fixture on the local sports scene since arrivingin Pittsburgh in January 1976 as the Steelers were winning the first of their six Super Bowls.
"I’m in the hospital recuperating and will be in various rehabilitation facilities for some time to come," Savran revealed on Facebook. "While I’m doing so, I won’t be able to be on the air with you daily. But, make no mistake that my primary objective in rehabilitating is to get back to a point where I can do a daily show.

"Rest assured, I still have the same energy and passion that I’ve always had in being there for you, and with you, every day. I may have lost an extremity but I’ve not lost any of my passion for the job. I fully expect to be back with you soon and we can continue our partnership in sports."
Savran initially worked in Pittsburgh at WWSW-AM and then the former KQV. He then spent a decade at WTAE-TV and also hosted a talk show on the former WTAE-AM.

He then worked for KBL-Fox Sports Net and also was a sports anchor for WPGH-TV. He has hosted intermission segments for Pittsburgh Penguins broadcasts on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh and also wrote a weekly sports column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for several years.
