Roberto Clemente Baseball Glove Fetches Staggering Auction Amount

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A game-used glove worn during the 1962 season by the late Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente sold for $118,230 at an auction on Sunday.

According to Grey Flannel Auctions, the initial bidding started at a relatively modest $10,000.

The 1962 season was a remarkable one for Clemente, even by his high standards. Clemente hit .312, recorded a .973 fielding percentage in the outfield with 270 putouts and 19 assists and won his second consecutive Gold Glove.

One of the greatest Pittsburgh Pirates players of all time, Clemente died on Dec. 31, 1972, when his plane crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico as he was attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He was 38.
