SWISSVALE, PA — A new waffle restaurant has debuted in Regent Square and its operator already has plans to expand to Oakland in 2022.

North Carolina-based Smashed Waffles has opened on South Braddock Avenue in the space once occupied by the Square Cafe, which moved to East Liberty.

Unlike traditional batter-based waffles, Smashed Waffles are rolled into dough balls and then smashed in a cast-iron waffle press. They are then baked to ensure a caramelized outer shell and a fluffy interior, according to the restaurant's website.
