Steelers' Head Coaching Search: Latest Info

The Steelers have updated the status of their quest to find Mike Tomlin's successor. Get the details here.

PITTSBURGH, PA — As other NFL teams begin to fill their coaching vacancies, the Steelers seem to be favoring a thorough search over a rapid one.

The team on Monday released a list of the candidates interviewed online thus far to succeed Mike Tomlin, who stepped down last week after 19 seasons on the job. Tomlin was just the third Steeleers head coach hired since 1969.

Online interviews have been conducted with the following candidates:

  • Ejiro Evero, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers.
  • Jeff Hafley, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator. He will not be coming to the Steelers as he was hired over the weekend to be the head coach of the Miami Dolphina.
  • Klay Kubiak, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator. He previously served as the team's assistant quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
  • Jesse Minter, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator. He previously served as the University of Michigan's defensive coordinator.
  • Nate Scheelhaase, Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator. He previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Iowa State University.
  • Chris Shula, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator. He previously served as the team's assistant linebackers coach.
  • Anthony Weaver, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator. He previously worked for the Cleveland

Browns, the Buffalo Bills, the Baltimore Ravens, the Houston Texans and the New York Jets.

The Steelers said in-person interviews with select candidates will occur this week. They are expected to include Brian Flores, the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator and former Steelers' defensive assistant; Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys and a Greenfield native; and Weaver of the Dolphins.

There currently are six NFL head coaching vacancies. In addition to the Steelers, the other teams looking for coaches are the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Las Vegas Raiders.
