Super Bowl LVII: Pittsburgh Connections Are Plentiful

Although the Steelers whiffed on making it to the Super Bowl this year, Pittsburgh has various connections to the big game.

PITTSBURGH,PA — No, the Steelers won't be playing in the Super Bowl. They haven't been there since shortly after Ben Roethlisberger started shaving.

But that doesn't mean Pittsburgh doesn't have rooting interests in Sunday's NFL championship game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Several players and a coach have Western Pennsylvania ties.

  • Eagles running back Miles Sanders, who was raised in Swissvale and was a three-year starter at Woodland Hills High School. He attended Penn State and was an Eagles second-round draft choice in 2019.
  • Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox, who played for the University of Pittsburgh. He was a fourth-round selection of the Eagles in 2018.
  • Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore, who attended Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel and Western Michigan University. He was a second-round pick in 2022.
  • Chiefs wide receiver Justin Watson, a South Fayette High School graduate who played college football at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a fifth round draft choice of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018.
  • Eagles head coach Nick Siriani, whose brother, Mike, is the head coach of Washington & Jefferson College.
