Tornado, Severe Storms Batter Pittsburgh Region

Numerous strong storms and a possible tornado hit the Pittsburgh area over the Memorial Day holiday weekend

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA — A tornado and severe storms plagued the Pittsburgh area over the Memorial Day weekend.

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EFO tornado briefly touched down Saturday night along Pleasant Hills Road near Raccoon Creek State Park. The tornado, with maximum wind speeds of 70-80 mph, damaged trees and a utility pole but no severe property damage was reported.

The tornado had a nearly 30-yard path width, according to the weather service.

The tornado erupted from a line of severe storms in western Allegheny County and northern Washington County that damaged tree limbs and downed power lines.

Strong storms popped up again on Sunday. Although severe storms were less numerous around the area on Memorial Day, a weather alert was issued early Monday evening for the Plum and New Kensington for a storm with winds as high as 50 mph.
