Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:
1) Sunday's 24-16 Steelers victory over the Carolina Panthers improved their record to 6-8, but they remain in last place in the AFC North and their playoff chances remain virtually nonexistent. The currently have the 14th pick in the first round of April's NFL Draft. Here's what sportswriters across the country thought about yesterday's game: John Breech, CBS Sports: "The Steelers' defensive game plan here was to shut down the run and make Sam Darnoldbeat them, and that game plan worked like a charm. The defense limited the Panthers to just 21 yards on the ground and that opened the door for T.J. Watt and friends to tee off on Darnold." From Noah Strackbein, Sports Illustrated: "By no means should the Pittsburgh Steelers start a quarterback controversy, and by no means should they hurt the confidence of Kenny Pickett, but they should consider starting Mitch Trubisky for another week. With the playoffs looming and each game carrying the weightof the season, the Steelers don't have time to mess around. Right now, each week is about winning, and that could mean not taking a risk on a rookie in Week 16."
2) Two people were taken into custody after the SWAT team was called to a home in the Brighton Heights neighborhood on Pittsburgh's North Side. The organization was called to the home, located on the 3500 block of Brighton Road, around 5 a.m. to assist with warrant service after a person with a warrant initially refused to leave the house. There were several people inside the house at the time, all of which were removed. Two were taken into custody for warrants. The SWAT team cleared the home within about two hours.
3) Two firefighters were injured fighting a blaze that erupted early Monday in the 3200 block of Universal Road. At this time, the firefighters' injuries are believed to minor. The fire broke out at around 3 a.m. The home was destroyed in the blaze but all occupants got out safely. The fire's cause remains under investigation.
4) The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will welcome its first director of inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility (IDEA) in the new year. Pittsburgh native Deborah Rogers will stop into the roll, coming to the library system from higher education. Rogers will lead the library's efforts to ensure patrons have equitable access to its books and services. Carnegie Library president and director Andrew Medlar said the position comes as the library prepares to develop a new strategic plan. "Inclusion and diversity and equity and accessibility must be key to what that plan and what that future is going to be," Medlar said. "I'm thrilled that she'll be here right at the very beginning of that so that she can contribute to it." The new position, Medlar explained, will examine and adjust how the library system and its procedures reflect the communities it serves. That includes everything from its recruitment and retention policies, to the free computers and Wi-Fi available to patrons. "Is there anything standing in the way of everyone being able to use those? Let's look at that," he said. "Let's make sure that our buildings are as physically accessible as possible."
5) A new exhibit is opening at the Carnegie Science Center, and interested guests can now enter to win free tickets. Titled Mars: The Next Giant Leap at Carnegie Science Center, the experience launches guests on a 300 million-mile journey to Mars.
