Life After Lice…Getting Back to School and Back to Normal

We just treated a family for head lice that was told by their school they needed to wait 48 hours before bringing their children back to school after having been treated. We pushed back. We won.

It is understandable that, after a virus or bacterial infection, a school wants children to be fever/vomit/diarrhea free for a period of time (usually 24 hours), since these infections can boomerang back and a child can experience a rebound if back in school too soon and spread their infection to a friend or classmate. Head lice infestation is a transient (we hope!) physical condition which can change in moments. One can literally have lice one minute and not have it the next (if treated properly). In all honesty, it generally takes more than a moment to get rid of it, but my clients go from infested to treated in under 2 hours. When a child is well-treated, there is no need for isolation or exclusion from school. The best thing for a child who has been treated for head lice is to get back to normal quickly. Truthfully, it’s the best thing for moms and dads too.
