Colonial Girls Soccer Blank Cheltenham

A first period goal by Amanda Cranney was the difference Thursday at Cheltenham.

girl's soccer team advanced to 4-0 on its young season Thursday afternoon at Cheltenham with a 1-0 win over the Panthers.

With a storm front approaching from one side of the field, and a JV soccer game 12 feet away on the other, Thursday's game between the Colonials and host Cheltenham had a claustrophobic feel. And then there was the defense.

After a header by Amanda Cranney gave Plymouth Whitemarsh a 1-0 lead at the ten minute mark, the final 70 of the match went by scoreless.

"These were not good conditions," said the Colonial's tenth-year head coach, Steve Slack. "They affected play."

What started as a stiff breeze turned into a cold drizzle by the break, and each offense appeared stifled by the sudden onset of autumn.

Amanda Cranney—The junior scored the game's only goal and kept the Colonials unbeaten entering the second half of September.

OTHER KEY PERFORMANCES

Jenna Kallman—On the rare occasions her defensemen allowed a loose ball through, Kallman protected the net. Her sliding save late in the second period kept the scoreboard clean and, for all intents and purposes, sealed the win.

THEY SAID IT

"We didn't play as well as we did the first three games, but we're just happy to get out of here with a win"—Slack, on taking a win where he can get one.
