Hagys Mill Road Gate Stays Open

The gate between Whitemarsh and Philadelphia will be open while Manor Road is repaired.

Hagys Mill Road will remain open between Whitemarsh and Philadelphia despite concerns tied with the road’s increased use.

Whitemarsh Chief of Police Mike Beaty said that, after discussing the issue with other township officials, it was decided that the safety gate that usually closes the road at its township boarder, would remain open for the foreseeable future.

“Our job is to make sure the road is as safe as it can be,” he said. “The gate will remain open until Manor Road is reopened.”

Supporting what he said , Beaty said that drivers should use caution if they use the road as a thoroughfare between Whitemarsh and Philadelphia.

“The road is not unsafe, but drivers should be on the look out,” he said. “there are a lot of hills in the area and people need to take it slow and watch out for each other, especially when it gets wet.”

Beaty said his concerns about the road have to do with its placement in a more hilly section of the township, as well as the maintenance of the road on its Philadelphia side.

“The Whitemarsh side is fine, it’s a regular road,” he said. “The Philadelphia side, however, is much smaller and not in as good a shape as ours is. The road is open and safe, but drivers have to be careful when driving on it.”

The township board of supervisors meets Thursday.
