Rep. Harper Bill Targets Smuggling Compartments
A bill proposed by PA Rep Kate Harper (R-61) aims to get smuggling vehicles off the streets.

A new bill proposed by Pennsylvania State Representative Kate Harper (R-61) would make it a crime to possess a vehicle with concealed compartments used for smuggling.
However, a person could be convicted of a such a crime only when there is intent to use the false compartments for illegal activity, according to Rep. Harper's office.
A press release from that office states that House bill 1521 came about after law enforcement officers in Montgomery County stated that they often stop the same vehicles more than once for illegal smuggling.
“False compartments in cars and trucks are often used along I-95 to transport illegal drugs, guns and even people from Florida to New York,” Harper said. “And they are used repeatedly, so the bill gives the district attorney the ability to have a vehicle used this way forfeited.”
The bill cleared the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, moving it to the full House for review. If passed, it would create a new subsection to the state law regarding possession of instruments of crime.
