Whitemarsh Township dramatically escalated the stakes in its housing complex on Wednesday when it condemned the 80-unit property, WPVI-TV reports.

Residents have until Friday at noon to move out of the apartments.

, the township had been assessing more than $1,000 a day in fines to the property since late February because of numerous safety, health, and permit violations.

"Was only a matter of time. I moved out of the towers but my son still lives there. We should have known this would happen," in a comment on an earlier story.

One reader who posted under a pseudonym suggested the evictions were racially motivated.

"The township only gave us a day and a half to move. This is outrageous! If the towers were comprised of white affluent tenants, this would not happen. Whitemarsh Township is keeping the white in Whitemarsh," posting as "Washington Towers."

"We will do everything we can to make sure that people are not living out on the streets. As of right now I don't know exactly what the solutions are," Assistant Whitemarsh Township Manager E.J. Lee said to WPVI-TV.
