Weather forecast:
1. World's Most Powerful Steam Train Coming To Pottstown (patch.com) — Pottstown residents will get a rare chance to see Union Pacific’s massive Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive when it makes a brief whistle stop at 51 South Hanover Street on July 2. Officials expect thousands of spectators, with Borough Parking Lot 1 recommended for viewing and Hanover Street closed for several hours for food vendors and festivities.
2. Man held for trial in fatal stabbing of another man in Pottstown (pottsmerc.com subscription) — A homeless man who spent time in the Pottstown area has been ordered to stand trial in Montgomery County Court on murder charges after a man was fatally stabbed inside a Walnut Street residence. Testimony from a roommate, a county detective, and a Pottstown police officer convinced a district judge there was enough evidence to move the case forward while the defendant awaits formal arraignment in July.
3. Penn State Berks Students Conduct Impactful Research Across Diverse Fields (bctv.org) — A Pottstown mechanical engineering student at Penn State Berks is among more than 100 undergraduates conducting hands-on research, including innovative 3D-printed structures that fold using special polymers. The college’s expanding symposiums, summer fellowships, and library awards are giving students across Berks County chances to present work on topics from children’s emotional regulation to antibiotic resistance in local waterways.
4. Main Line Health Proposes Major New Hospital Campus in Upper Providence (montco.today) — A proposed new Main Line Health hospital in Upper Providence could reshape where Pottstown-area residents go for care, joining Pottstown Hospital and Phoenixville Hospital as nearby options. The 108-bed facility, planned on a 42-acre site near Providence Town Center, is in early zoning review and could eventually add medical office buildings, garages, and road improvements along the busy Route 29 and Route 422 corridor.
5. Matt Campbell can't allow Nebraska to knock out the last in-state WR off Penn State's board (victorybellrings.com) — Penn State football is under pressure to keep top in-state wide receivers from leaving, after four-star Pottstown native Matthew Gregory committed to UCLA. With another blue-chip Pennsylvania receiver still uncommitted, analysts say head coach Matt Campbell must fend off Nebraska and other rivals to avoid losing more homegrown talent.
