📰 News we're reading

1. Edgewood school's AC dies for first day of school (pottsmerc.com subscription) — Pottstown families should know the Edgewood School building started the year without working air conditioning after its decades-old chiller finally failed, leaving only temporary cooling in place for special education and Head Start students. District leaders say a full replacement, likely costing around $2 million, won't happen until spring or summer 2027, as they juggle other big-ticket projects like new athletic facilities.

2. Pottstown Library raising funds to fix broken elevator (readingeagle.com) — Pottstown's regional public library is halfway to its $125,000 goal to repair a broken elevator that's closed most of the upper floor and disrupted popular programs. A European car show in town Sept. 3-6 will sell custom license plates to benefit the project, and residents can also donate directly online or by mail to keep the library fully accessible.

3. 'Pottstown has failed you': Council members call for firing of borough manager at Pottstown town hall (pottsmerc.com subscription) — Pottstown residents packed a town hall as two borough council members publicly called for firing the borough manager, citing his contract, pay raises, and handling of local issues. Neighbors raised concerns about crime, homelessness, sober homes, and communication from police and council, while officials debated how tax-exempt properties, shelters, and enforcement decisions are affecting daily life in the borough.

4. Pottstown recorded 2 scam reports for week ending Aug. 15, 2026 (westmonttimes.com) — Pottstown residents reported two scams to the Better Business Bureau for the week ending Aug. 15, down from three the week before, with only one loss of $29.99. The cases involved an employment scam and an online purchase that never arrived, and officials urge residents to use BBB Scam Tracker to research and report suspicious offers.

5. New trail connector lets bikers ride 70 miles from Philly to Reading. It's 'a really, really big deal.' (inquirer.com) — Cyclists can now ride an unbroken 70-mile stretch of the Schuylkill River Trail from Philadelphia to Reading, thanks to a new connector that brings riders directly into Pottstown. Local leaders hope the easier access will boost downtown restaurants, inns, and Riverfront Park, with a county ribbon-cutting planned Sept. 29 and a Tour de Montco ride from Pottstown in mid-September.
