In the Philadelphia area, an estimated 569,000 residents hit the road for the holiday, according to AAA, and 89 percent of those traveled by car. That's the largest amount of people on the road on Thanksgiving weekend since 2007. AAA attributed the increase to moderate gas prices and an improving economy. Travel volume has been increasing in the area steadily for eight consecutive years, statistics show.

Of the 931 crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police, 61 were alcohol related, 271 people were injured, and six people were killed, according to statistics.

In addition to the 610 DUI arrests, 13,941 speeding citations, 1,264 citations for people for not wearing seat belts, and 183 citations to drivers for not securing children in safety seats were also issued.

All of these numbers reference cases investigated by state police, and do not take into account arrests, citations, and accidents issued at the local level.
