Nor'easter hits McMichael Park

Trees and power lines down. Friends of McMichael Park: Call to action

The Nor'easter that swept through Philadelphia this past Friday played some havoc in McMichael Park in East Falls. Two large trees were uprooted and pulled down power lines with them. One fell across McMichael Street the other fell next to the newly renovated War Memorial within McMichael Park. Another pine snapped 40 feet from the ground causing the entire top half of the tree to come down. Half a block from the park, another tree also fell across Henry Avenue and homes lost electric. Grid=lock around McMichael Park from 4-8pm.

On Sunday, two days after the storm, the worker-bees from the Friends of McMichael Park came out around noon time along with some sunshine. They cut up a broken major limb from the Pawlonia Tree on Coulter St. Replanted a Hackberry tree knocked over from the 60 mile an hour winds. Also stockpiled branches park side on Midvale Avenue and West Coulter Street sides. PP&R will come by with trucks to pick up the piled limbs. PECO will come through to reconnect the wires so the lighting within the park and neighboring homes can be restored. Tree crews will then come through once the wires are back in place to remove the fallen trees. Mother Nature has her way of clearing out. So Friends, utility companies and park personnel need to work together to restore natural beauty.
