The Philadelphia School District is reportedly hoping to choose 800 new teachers from a pool of around 5,000 applicants.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Philadelphia School District is looking to hire at least 800 teachers by June 30 to ensure every classroom in the city has an instructor.

The district is looking for a pool of around 5,000 applicants to choose from, according to reports.

In the fall of 2015, around 190 teaching positions were reportedly still vacant.

Union officials said they were happy that the school district wanted to hire more teachers but expressed doubts that what they were suggesting was possible.

Teachers have not had raises in four years and they often have to buy classroom supplies themselves, Philly.com reports.

Around 1,000 applications have came in since recruitment went into full swing in January, according to the report.

The starting salary for teachers with no experience is $45,360, the report states.
