Phillies Select Mickey Moniak With First Pick In 2016 MLB Draft

Could Mickey Moniak be the future face of the Phillies franchise? They sure hope so, after taking him number one overall Thursday night.

The southern California high school outfielder from La Costa Canyon high school has been compared to Christian Yelich, a tall and fast outfielder for the Florida Marlins.

The Phillies earned the top pick in Thursday's draft after a rough 2015 season in which they finished 63-99, the worst record in baseball.

The Phillies will make one more pick on Thursday night: the 42nd pick overall, which is the first pick in the second round. The Phillies do not have a pick in the competitive balance round, which includes a handful of teams between the first and second.

The last - and only - time the Phillies picked first overall in the draft was 1998. They selected Pat Burrell with that pick. Burrell eventually became a part of the club that led the Phillies to the 2008 World Series Championship.
