Roxborough Really Wants A Trader Joe's...At Least On Facebook

Roxborough wants a Trader Joes.

At least, that is, according to new Facebook group urging the supermarket to chain to move into the area. The page had 1,875 “likes” as of Tuesday morning.

The group’s ”about” section says that residents of the Roxborough-Manayunk area have wanted a Trader Joe’s for years. One post cited the battle to bring the chain to town as a “15 year crusade.”

The catalyst for the group was the announcement that the Ivy Ridge Superfresh was going out of business.

That could be the “ideal location” for a new Trader Joe’s, the group says.

“Please continue to like and share our Facebook page. Numbers are important. We want to show Trader Joe’s that our community needs them!! THANK YOU!!” a recent post on their page reads.

The Ivy Ridge Superfresh announced its closing recently. A sign at the store says that it will officially close on November 20.

Trader Joe’s has a Location Request page on their website which allows customers to request the store’s next location. The Roxborough Facebook group urges everyone to submit a location request.

According to the Roxborough Development Corporation, Trader Joe’s is the most requested retail store in the neighborhood, as more and more residents want healthier, more local, and more organic alternatives to mainstream options.

“As part of our Roxborough 2020 Survey conducted earlier this year Trader Joe’s was the most requested retail store. We believe this speaks to a large desire for healthier grocery options in Roxborough,” Roxborough Development Corporation said in an October Facebook post. “We have passed your Facebook Page and our recent survey data onto representatives that work with Trader Joe’s real estate team. We appreciate the enthusiasm and look forward to continuing to share our Roxborough 2020 vision with residents and potential retailers.”

There’s a Trader Joe’s at 2121 Market Street in Center City, along with locations in Bryn Mawr and Glenside.
