The gunman has been identified as Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, who was killed by law enforcement in an exchange of gunfire.
POWER, a local interfaith group, encouraged people from all backgrounds to come to the vigil.
"POWER believes strongly that radical love is the antidote for radical hate," the group said in a statement. "Islamaphobia is not an answer. The man who committed these acts of violence and terror was inspired by a hateful ideology. This tragedy is a reminder of the work we must do to organize for policies that will reduce violence. It is deeply distressing to hear news reports that the gunman was able to legally purchase military assault weapon used in this massacre. The heart of our work is recognizing that our humanity unites all of us. We must use every ounce of our being to counter this culture of dehumanization that infects our communities."
Mateen's father condemned his son's actions on Monday and said that he would have arrested his son himself.
Meteen has been previously investigated by the FBI for possible links to terrorists. Authorities have said that thus far, there is no evidence that Meteen had direct contact with ISIS, even though he was likely inspired by propaganda online. In a 911 call placed immediately prior to the shooting, Meteen claimed allegiance to the terrorist cell.
