Whiz Kid: Sam Bender

Quaker Valley graduate receives the Robby Hague Memorial Scholarship.

Name: Sam Bender

Age: 18

School: Quaker Valley

Year: 2011 graduate

Accomplishment: Sam Bender received the Robby Hague Memorial Scholarship, which is given in memory of Robby Hague, a graduate who passed away unexpectedly at age 24 of an undiagnosed heart condition.

This is only the second year the $1,500 scholarship has been awarded and Bender was honored to receive the prize.

“I didn't really know Robby personally, but from talking to others and the people who knew him well, I know that he was respected and well-liked by many in the community,” Bender said.

Hague was known by his family for having a great thirst for knowledge and Bender received the scholarship because he shares the same quality.

“I try and hope to continue my learning long after my schooling requires it,” Bender said. “But more importantly, it is clear that Robby was a great friend to everyone who knew him, and this is something that I believe everyone wants to be.”

The annual scholarship is funded through fundraising events throughout the year and by donations.

Bender plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall.
