3 Hurt After Car Goes Airborne on Route 222 Bypass

Upper Macungie police said three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Route 222 Bypass at Grim Road in Breinigsville.

Editor's note: This article has been corrected. An earlier version of this article misstated who police said did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt. According to a police release, the 82-year-old driver did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt.

Three people were injured Sunday morning after a car driven by an 82-year-old woman went airborne on Route 222 at Grim Road, Upper Macungie police said.

Police said they saw the accident at 9:47 a.m. while monitoring traffic on the Route 222 Bypass.

The vehicle driven by the 82-year-old woman was traveling south on the Route 222 Bypass at what appeared to be a high rate of speed, police said. The vehicle struck the raised concrete island that separates the straight traffic lane and right turning lane on Route 222, went airborne and landed on Grim Road, where it struck another car. 

The 82-year-old woman, of Allentown, was taken to the hospital for a severe head laceration and other trauma, police said. She did not appear to have been wearing a seatbelt, police said.

The driver of the other car, a 58-year-old man from New Tripoli, and his passenger, a 59-year-old woman from New Tripoli, also were taken to the hospital for neck and back pain. Police did not identify the drivers or the passenger involved in the crash.
