St. Patrick's Day Parade Awards Go To Cavan Society, Carmela's

Awards for "Best Appearing Group" in the 2011 and 2012 Springfield St. Patrick's Day Parades were presented during the Board of Commissioners meeting April 10.

Third Ward Commissioner Lee Janiczek presented a proclamation to representatives of the society noting the group was originally known as the Cavan Social and Benevolent Society, founded in 1907 to provide assistance to its members in the event of a disability or death. Its support continues today.

The Cavan Society hosts a variety of social events celebrating Irish heritage, including the Cavan Ball. This year, the 105th gala will take place at the . The society participates in both the Philadelphia and Springfield St. Patrick's Day parades and has won many awards.

First Ward Commissioner Michael Culp presented a proclamation to Carmela's Dance Studio for "Best Appearing Group" in Springfield's 2011 parade. The dance studio was established in 1995 by Carmela Mayo and sponsors "" to benefit health research initiatives. Many forms of dance, including ballet, jazz and tap, are taught there.

Culp said his daughter was part of the dance studio's group in the parade.
