610-314-5848: The Phone Number Behind Scam, Local Police Say

Local officials are warning of a phone scam that involves demanding residents pay cash to prevent a warrant for their arrest from being served.

According to multiple police departments from throughout the region, scammers are demanding victims go to a local pharmacy to buy money cards, and then call 610-314-5848 to provide the number of the money card.

Calls to that number went unanswered Wednesday, and went straight to voicemail. The voicemail is a male with a southern accent claiming to be with the Chester County Sheriff’s Department. That number is false, authorities said.

“There is an organized effort on the part of individuals attempting to scam residents of Chester County and surrounding counties,” Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh said in a press release. “These calls are bogus and do not originate here in the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.”’

All residents are reminded not to share personal information over the phone with anyone they do not know.
