Rites of Autumn: Swarthmore Presbyterian’s Fall Fair Ushers in the Season

In Swarthmore, summer may come to an end in September, but autumn doesn’t really begin until Saturday, October 4 with Swarthmore Presbyterian Church’s annual Fall Fair.

Pumpkins and perennials, crab cakes and Scotch eggs, moon bounces and pumpkin painting, arts and crafts, antiques, books and ephemera…the Fall Fair appeals to all your family’s interests and appetites. The 2014 Fair will be held rain or shine from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the church, 727 Harvard Avenue in Swarthmore.

Inside and outside the church, there’s plenty for kids and adults to love. Great shopping abounds at the flea market in the Community Center, while the church’s McCahan Hall is filled wall-to-wall with books from this year’s novels to rare and vintage volumes. Antiques and collectibles are on offer in Fellowship Hall, while in Loeffler Chapel, a silent auction invites bids on select furniture and furnishings. A wide selection of costume and quality jewelry, handbags, and scarves is offered in the Study. Pumpkins and gourds are available to bring a seasonal touch to your home. Children can shop for toys, games and sporting goods and revel in the myriad games in the Kid Zone.

The Artisan’s Atrium is an exciting addition to this year’s Fall Fair. The church’s courtyard becomes a gallery offering original paintings, photographs, textiles and ceramics by local artists and artisans. Shoppers will find unique treasures and gifts items including furniture and furnishings, tote bags/purses, headbands, quilts, and more, including pieces made by congregation members.

For children, the Fair is bigger and better than ever. The Kid Zone offers face painting, hair spraying, pumpkin painting, and two moon bounces for children both large and small. Age-appropriate games for young children through middle schoolers allow kids to accumulate points in competition for fun and bragging rights.

Hungry? The Fall Fair’s food favorites include a seafood bar featuring oysters, shrimp and crabcakes, a grille with burgers, hot dogs and sausages, salads, desserts in the Pantry to eat now or savor later, SPC’s famous Scotch eggs, and Kids’ Kuisine with a healthy and delicious menu all its own.

The church’s sanctuary will be open for visits, musical performances and fellowship throughout the day; visitors are most welcome. Parking is available on the north side of Harvard Avenue, in the lot opposite the church, at the Swarthmore Executive Building, and at the Swarthmore train station.
