Burglary, Thefts, Vehicle Break-Ins: Springfield Police Blotter

SPRINGFIELD, PA – Police in Springfield Township issued their most recent crime report Monday, May 7.
The report covers incidents that occurred between April 30 and May 5 in the township.
Notable incidents include a burglary on Sheffield Drive, juveniles dangerously riding bikes on the road, and a hit and run DUI.

April 30, 12:24 p.m.
Target security, at 1200 Baltimore Pike, reported a retail theft. Ciarah Brown, 20, of Chester, was observed concealing items in a personal bag as she walked through the store. She then attempted to leave the store without rendering payment for the merchandise. Total value of the theft was $194. Brown was taken into custody, processed and released. She will be charged through summons for retail theft. Det. Bridget McCarthy is handling the case.

April 30, 1:35 p.m.
Report of a burglary discovered in the 800 block of Sheffield Drive. Family members were babysitting at the house and left for a walk. When they returned, they discovered someone had entered the house and stole a wallet from the living room. It appeared the suspect entered through a first floor window. The homeowners were notified. They believe jewelry, loose change and other items may be missing. Det. Bridget McCarthy is investigating.
April 30, 1:40 p.m.
The CVS Store, at 795 Baltimore Pike, reported a retail theft. The manager observed a male customer holding a bag filled with Flonase nasal spray and asked if he needed assistance. The male fled, dropping the merchandise before leaving the store. Total value of the merchandise was $604. A description was provided and Officer Brian Dunkle located the suspect in the 800 block of Baltimore Pike. Marvin Sims, 31, of Philadelphia, admitted to trying to steal the merchandise. He was positively identified and placed under arrest for retail theft. He was also found to have two outstanding warrants for prior thefts. Sgt John DiTrolio is handling the case.
May 1, 11:14 a.m.
Officer Michael Kingsbury responded to Target, at 1200 Baltimore Pike, for a suspicious person. William Kratz, 51, of Oreland, Pennsylvania, was contacted in the vestibule area. Officer Kingsbury recognized Kratz from a prior arrest in January and verified an outstanding warrant issued by Springfield District Court. Kratz was taken into custody and transported to the court.
May 2, 10:41 a.m.
A resident from the 300 block of Prospect Road reported his vehicle entered overnight. The vehicle had been rummaged through, but nothing was reported stolen.
May 2, 8:05 p.m.
Reported hit and run crash of a parked vehicle in the unit block of Locust Avenue. The striking vehicle was last seen heading east on Springfield Road. While checking the area, Officer Kevin Oswald observed fresh tire marks on the roadway consistent with a vehicle dragging a tire. He followed the marks and discovered the striking vehicle stopped in the 300 block of Spring Valley Road. The driver, a 35-year-old male from Springfield, was attempting to change a damaged front wheel. Officer Oswald spoke with the driver and observed signs of intoxication. Narcotics were also found in the vehicle. The driver was arrested for DUI and later released to his wife. Det Daniel McNeely is handling the case.
May 3, 4:27 p.m.
An employee of the Springfield Country Club reported a theft from vehicle. The employee discovered the passenger side window smashed and her pocketbook missing from the floor. There were no witnesses to the theft.
May 4, 1:18 p.m.
Criminal mischief was reported at the Yo Crave Frozen Yogurt, at 467 Baltimore Pike. The owner discovered the door knob damaged on the rear basement door of the business. No entry was gained.
May 4, 6:15 p.m.
Macy's security, at 1250 Baltimore Pike, reported a retail theft. Three males were observed filling a backpack with merchandise. As they attempted to leave the store, one juvenile male from Chester was detained with the backpack. Inside was merchandise totaling $237. The juvenile was arrested and will be charged with retail theft through juvenile petition. He was released to his aunt. Det Robert Nutley is handling the case.
May 4, 9 p.m.
The Northern County DUI Taskforce conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 400 block of Baltimore Pike. Three DUI arrests were made and six citations were issued for vehicle violations.
May 5, 7:55 p.m.
While on a special patrol detail, Sgt Andrew McKinney and Officer Kevin Oswald observed a group of bicyclists riding in the middle of the highway at West Springfield Road and Windsor Circle. The group was obstructing the lanes of travel and were crossing the center line into oncoming traffic causing a hazard. The group of eight juveniles was stopped and identified. Five of the juveniles had been stopped by police on prior occasions and warned about similar activity. Parents were notified and picked up their children. Citations for obstructing the highway and disorderly conduct will be filed.
