Delco Mom Charged After Home Alone Kid Starts Fire: Police

No one was hurt and no major damage occurred in the fire set by the lone 8-year-old boy.

A Delaware County mother is facing charges after her young son, who was left home alone, started a fire in their apartment on March 11, according to police and court records.

Potehboe K. Suah, 32, of Secane, has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person, according to court records.

Suah was charged after her 8-year-old son, who was left alone in their apartment, had access to a lighter and set paper towels on fire.

Luckily, the fire did not result in injuries or major damage, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

Upper Darby Police Chief Michael Chitwood told the outlet a neighbor in the Ashland Terrace Apartments smelled smoke and heard a child screaming, prompting the neighbor to call 911.

The times reports Suah was contacted by phone by her son after police arrived and were with the boy, who was shaken but unharmed.

She told then police over the phone she was at work and that her boyfriend went to a fast food restaurant. But the boyfriend later told police he had not been watching her son, the outlet reports.

Suah was released on $10,000 unsecured bail after being arraigned March 12 and is slated to appear for her preliminary hearing on March 23.
