Today, June 21, is not only the first day of summer but also Springfield Township Founders Day.

Today, June 21, is the date the township was founded many moons ago.
"[Springfield] traces its governmental beginning to the year 1686 when the early settlers from Europe secured land grants from William Penn," the township website states.

Although there will be no official township celebration this year, Founders Day is recognized annually as a nod to the town's origin.
In 1986, the township held a tricentennial celebration, which included a parade, to celebrate its 300th birthday. A time capsule was buried in the center courtyard of on Dec. 7, 1986.

In another 25 years, for the 350th Founders Day, June 21 2036, community members will have a chance to see what is inside.
