For the last several weeks, the students have used the Kids Give Back lessons to gain an understanding of good nutrition, how to read food labels and the math skills needed to shop within a budget.

On Monday, May 7, the students showcased what they’ve learned by delivering $150 worth of groceries that they selected personally to stock the shelves of the Family Service Center in Chester and help fight hunger in our area.

The Kids Give Back program teaches students about how many people in this country – and in our area – do not have access to healthy food on a daily basis.  It also includes lessons on what people need in their diets to stay healthy and covers the basics about proteins, fats, sugar and more to give the students a perspective on what to look for when they shop for food. Armed with that information, the students went online to Peapod.com for a “real life” lesson.  Peapod gave the students $150 to place an online grocery order for a local food bank. Holy Cross students chose the pantry at the Family Service Center.

Using Peapod’s NutriFilter, the students sorted groceries by nutritional content and by cost, tracked their spending in real time via their virtual shopping cart, and made adjustments to maximize the nutritional content of their purchase.
