Plenty to Celebrate in Springfield

Several notable accomplishments are announced. Ready for some hockey and ice skating?

Springfield Township has a lot to be proud of lately.

Board President Thomas V. Mahoney said the Sept. 13 meeting at the ice rink was historic because it was the first time the held its regular meeting outside of the .

A for the re-opening of the renovated ice rink took place kicking off a night of notable announcements.

The ice rink will be open for hockey practice, lessons, rentals and birthday parties Thursday Oct. 6. It will be open for public skating Friday, Oct. 28.

“Over 5,000 public skaters, 20 hockey teams, ranging from elementary school level to men’s leagues, use the facility each year,” Mahoney said. He mentioned that the ice rink was once featured in a Bruce Willis movie and a Campbell’s Soup commercial.

“We welcome you to the joy of your beautiful rink for years to come,” said Commissioner Gina Sage, who spearheaded the rink renovation project. 

The rink has been closed since February of 2010 while roof repair work was completed. The rink was closed after sustaining major roof damage caused by snow buildup following several powerful snowstorms.

Township officials sought to negotiate with the insurance company and reach a settlement that included a long-term solution to replace the collapsed ice rink roof.

“We did it with no additional cost to taxpayers,” Sage said.

On top of all these proud notes, commissioners , who demonstrated heroic life-saving actions at Springfield Swim Club over the summer.
