A Springfield man set his Granite Terrace home on fire before fatally shooting himself early Friday, according to reports.

Police tell NBC10 that Michael Schoen poured accelerants on his home to light the fire before killing himself. When firefighters arrived, they found the 57-year-old dead at the scene from a gunshot wound, Springfield Police Chief Joseph Daly told the news network.

The fire, which began around 12:30 a.m., was put under control in about and hour, 6ABC reports.

Officers had performed a well-being check on Schoen, who recently lost his job, at the house last week, NBC10 reports.
